An ETIAS travel authorization is valid for either of the following periods:
3 years or
Until your passport expires
ETIAS is associated with a specific passport number; therefore, if you renew your U.S. passport, you must reapply for ETIAS, even though it has been less than 3 years since your initial approval.
A valid ETIAS allows for multiple trips to European Schengen countries, with a maximum stay of 90 days per 180-day duration. You can enter and leave the Schengen Area within this designated timeframe.
To apply for an ETIAS, you must possess a valid passport and have an accepted payment method to pay the application fee of EUR 7.
To complete the ETIAS application, you must provide your required travel documents, including a valid machine-readable or electronic passport. These documents must have a validity of more than 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the EU and must have been issued within the last 10 years. If you are related to a citizen of the EU or an EFTA country, you may be eligible for an exemption.
Here is a list of countries currently eligible to apply for ETIAS. Please note that this list of third-country nationals eligible for entry via the ETIAS is subject to change frequently.
Australia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu.
Albania, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Mexico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America, Mauritius, Seychelles, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Timor-Leste and the United Arab Emirates.
The ETIAS system will encompass all EU Schengen member states, including future additions like Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania. It will also apply to countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, as well as European microstates with open borders like Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City.
For study programs lasting no more than 90 days, an ETIAS would suffice as a travel authorization. However, for more extended programs, a student visa is required. It is recommended to contact an official consulate representative of the EU member state you intend to study in before your trip to confirm the necessary documents.
